‘Top Chef Junior’ finale features girl chefs defying stereotypes

Who runs the reality kitchen world? Girls. The “Top Chef Junior” finale airs Saturday, and for the first time both contenders for the winning title — and $50,000 grand prize — are (very) young ladies. Native New Yorker Nikki Bidun, 11, and Atlanta’s Londyn Green, 12, will be food fighting for the honor and cash. And they might not realize it, but they are also beating down a common culinary misconception. Less than 7 percent of US restaurants are led by female chefs — but more than half the students at the Culinary Institute of America are now women. Yes, these gals are on trend to change things. Upper West Sider Bidun, who auditioned but didn’t make the cut for the series’ debut season last year, identifies strongly with being from NYC — not only “because of the food but because of the attitude.” Green, meanwhile, takes a lot of inspiration from her Jamaican aunts and uncles, putting a “Caribbean twist” on her recipes. Universal Kids The two out-cooked 10 other youngsters, all between the ages of 10 and 13, to become the cooking show’s finalists. Now, only a three-course meal stands between Bidun, Green and the cooking crown. Saturday’s show will feature the Manhattanite and the Georgian dishing up a first course which pays tribute to their families, a second course honoring mentors who influenced their food POV and a third plate to demonstrate how much their skills have grown. “Top Chef Junior” host Vanessa Lachey, head judge Curtis Stone and season finale guest judges Emeril Lagasse, Tiffany Derry and Graham Elliott will be determining which junior chef most deserves their tiny toque. The season finale of “Top Chef Junior” airs December 1 at 6 p.m. on Universal Kids.
