Twitter critics: Will Smith’s skin is too light for this biopic

Will Smith can play a blue-skinned swoll genie in “Aladdin,” simply don’t ask him to play anyone too “black.” The Oscar-nominated actor has confronted backlash after Deadline reported that he can be enjoying Venus and Serena’s dad Richard Williams within the upcoming biopic “King Richard.” The issue? The previous Contemporary Prince is apparently too honest to play the darker-hued tennis coach, in line with social media justice watchdogs. “Will Smith is about to be the Scarlett Johansson of black motion pictures,” Tweeted one critic, referencing the white actress enjoying an Asian character within the doomed live-action remake of the “Ghost within the Shell” anime. (By no means thoughts that Smith himself is African-American.) Different commenters have likened the incident to the light-skinned black actress Zoe Saldana having to put on “blackface” make-up to play the ebony jazz musician Nina Simone within the movie “Nina.” Richard Williams isn’t as recognizable as Simone, an icon whose work and look was defiantly political and known as consideration to her blackness.
