Fashion icon André Leon Talley reflects on life as black, gay man

“The Gospel In line with André” follows the gregarious, larger-than-life editor, stylist and trend icon André Leon Talley. But in contrast to earlier shiny docs such as “The September Difficulty,” “Gospel” is way over a dressed-up Vogue infomercial. Fashion followers might know Talley as Vogue editrix Anna Wintour’s perennially caftan-clad sidekick. And “Gospel” showcases the 68-year-old’s trademark zest and wit, as nicely as his everyman high quality. (His scenes together with his childhood pal — a working class Southerner who prefers baseball and sizzling canine to couture and caviar — are a number of the finest.) However director Kate Novack pushes Talley to talk about his experiences as a black, gay man. He recollects how white college students at Duke, the place his grandmother was a housekeeper, threw rocks at him, and the way his mom was embarrassed by his outré church outfits. Later, one Yves Saint Laurent worker would name him “Queen Kong.” It is probably not the prettiest trend documentary, however “Gospel” is definitely probably the most actual — and, because of Talley’s trailblazing, inspiring.
