NOFX loses major sponsor over Vegas shooting joke at concert
The lead singer of the venerable punk band NOFX made a tasteless joke at a concert in Las Vegas about last year’s deadly mass shooting there — leading to the group losing a major sponsor.
Frontman Fat Mike – whose real name is Michael Burkett – dropped jaws Sunday night in Sin City by quipping about how no punk rock fans were killed in the Oct. 1 massacre.
“That sucked,” Fat Mike said of the Route 91 Harvest festival shooting, which took the lives of 58 people. “But at least they were country fans and not punk rock fans.”
Then on Wednesday, California-based Stone Brewing, canceled its “Punk in Drublic” sponsorship deal with NOFX for a string of music and beer festivals.
“We at Stone Brewing are aware of NOFX’s insensitive and indefensible statements this past weekend,” said a statement from the craft brewery in Escondido, California. “As a result, we are severing all our ties with NOFX, including festival sponsorship and the production of our collaboration beer.”
NOFX apologized on the band’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
“I can’t sleep, no one in my band can. What we said in Vegas was sh–ty and insensitive and we are all embarrassed by our remarks,” the band said.
“So we decided we will all get together to discuss and write an in-depth, sincere, and honest apology because that’s what the people we offended and hurt deserve.”
