The new Maria from Steven Spielberg’s ‘West Side Story’ shows off her pipes
“West Side Story” director Steven Spielberg lastly discovered his Maria — on the very far west aspect of Manhattan. Make that New Jersey.
Rachel Zegler, a 17-year-old high-school scholar from Clifton, beat out 30,000 hopefuls for the coveted position in Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 traditional. However not like the unique movie’s Maria, Natalie Wooden, Zegler will do all her personal singing.
And whereas she submitted a video of herself singing each “Tonight” and “I Really feel Fairly” — which the Colombian-American sang in Spanish — she’s already performed Maria, in an August 2017 manufacturing in Englewood, NJ’s BergenPAC.
“Child Driver” star Ansel Elgort was forged a number of months in the past as Tony, Maria’s doomed lover. Rita Moreno, who performed Maria’s fiery BFF, Anita, within the 1961 movie’s Anita, has a job in it, too.
“West Side Story” — a heartfelt, New York Metropolis-centric updating of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by a 26-year-old Stephen Sondheim — was first carried out on Broadway in 1957. It has hardly ever been off the stage since.
